The Chief Sustainable and Resilience Advisor to Accra Mayor, Hon. Henry Kotey, Mr. Desmond Chris Appiah has said, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly is committed to end the adhoc of perennial flood disasters that occurred on June 3, 2015.
“As a result of the commitment, he said, the Assembly had put a premium on disaster preparedness and risk reduction to prevent flooding or manage them when they occur”.
He, however, admitted that there was enormous work to be done to get there…
Speaking on New Day FM News on Thursday, June 3,2021, in commemoration and lessons learnt after the June 3rd, 2015 tragedy, he said the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly is seriously enforcing the report of Justice Isaac Delali Douse Commission’s recommendation after their investigation.
A 5 member committee chaired by retired Justice Isaac Delali Douse was set up to investigate the June 3rd fire incident that claimed lives at the GOIL filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
He told New Day FM’s Kaakyire Kwasi Afari that, as part of the efforts, the Assembly is tackling the country’s drainage problems by constructing underground drains, dredging of drains and expressed the hope that the project would be worth pursuing by the Metropolis.
“The current government according to him, have been supportive to the fight against filth which mostly breeds contagious diseases to some areas of Accra”.
Mr. Chris Appiah therefore expressed his satisfaction over dredging works done at the Odaw river, Korle-lagoon and other part of the region.
He said as part of their activities, sanitation has been identified as a major key to good health, stating that “cleanliness is next to Godliness”.
The City Advisor continue that, keeping the environment clean is a collective responsibility of everybody. He called on Ghanaians to join the “let Accra work again” campaign launched by the regional Minister.
