The Okyeman Benkumhene, Daasebre Mireku Afari II, and his cabinet performed a traditional rite on Monday, March 30, to install three energetic young chiefs who will support him in running his administration.

They are Nana Botwe Danso I, the Okuasehene, Nana Obeng Sarpaning, the Begoro Kontihen, and Nana Kwame Ansah, the Agona Akwamuhene.

This historical program took place at the Begoro Palace under the Traditional Area, where hundreds of attendees graced the memorable occasion, as some of the stools had been vacant for more than 30 years.

Speaking to a cross-section of journalists, the Okyeman Benkumhene, who doubles as the overlord of Begoro, revealed that during the administering of the oath of allegiance, he warned that in case they rose against him in the future, he wouldn’t hesitate to destool them.

“My vision is to help lobby for more developmental projects for my people to transform their lives, thus installing these Chiefs to help me achieve it but if they team up to sabotage to humiliate me and Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amotia Ofori Panin I will snatch the stool and give it to someone ready to serve Okyeman,” he expressed.

The Begorohene further said it is the responsibility of the chiefs to serve their people with respect, humility, and integrity in order for them to also rally behind them to succeed in their reigns.

Daasebre Afari II advised them to humble themselves and give the needed respect to Begoroman and their various relatives, who, among other people in their families, selected them to lead them as their chief to enable both parties to stay in a harmonious way.

“I am here to serve you as well, so in the course of your duty, when you encounter any challenges beyond your strength, kindly fall on me for advice and guidelines to rectify it to bring peace to your people,” Daasebre Mireku Afari II told them.

Nana Obeng Sarpaning, during his swearing-in as the Kontihen of the Begoro Traditional Area, pledged to serve and respond to the calls of Daasebre Mireku Afari II at any time his service would be needed.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Suhum Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, Lydia Ohenewaa, has reaffirmed her readiness to work with the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, to complete the stalled Astroturf project for the community.

According to her, she will team up with the MP and relevant stakeholders to mobilize resources to complete the project for the community.

Her pledge follows the sudden stalling of the project, for which sod-cutting was carried out by the MP popularly known as ‘Protozoa’ before the 2024 general elections.

The MCE was speaking at the maiden edition of the Ramadan Cup held at the Amanhyia M/A Basic School Park on Saturday, March 28.

Madam Ohenewaa said youth development is very essential to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, hence the organization of the tournament to strengthen the bond between herself and the youth in the Municipality.

Participants of the maiden Virgin Ramadan Cup included Suhum Zone 1, Nankese Zone, Akorabo Zone, and Suhum Zone 2.


Akorabo and Suhum Zone 1 met at the grand finale, and Akorabo beat them by a lone goal to lift the trophy, going home with Gh¢7,000 together with medals, footballs, and a set of brand-new jerseys.

However, Suhum Zone 1 also received ¢5,000, along with medals, footballs, and brand-new jerseys, to appreciate their participation in the competition.

According to the MCE, football is the only game that brings together all the scores of life, and it promotes unity and love among young people.

She mentioned that over the decades, the youth of Suhum have contributed immensely to the development of the Assembly, and they continue to rally their support behind her since she assumed office as the Municipal Chief Executive.

She described their genuine act and love as incredible and assured them that she would do her best to get the Astroturf pitch completed and hand it over to them so they have a place to play football.

A Doctor with the Aura Family Dental Care in Koforidua, Dr. Dent Emmanuel Baah Abeka, has highlighted the adverse impact of toothache on children’s education worldwide, particularly Ghana.

He hinted this affects their academic performance, which Ghana is no exception.

His observation follows recent research indicating that approximately 40% of children, age 12 suffer from decayed, missing, or stained teeth, and 1 in 4 pupils show signs of tooth decay as of 2026.

A 2025 study also found a 58.5% prevalence of self-reported oral health problems, with toothache ( 51.7%) and swollen gums (38.5%) being the most common.

Speaking at the official opening of Aura Family Dental Care in Koforidua on March 28, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aura Family Dental Care, Dr. Dent Emmanuel Baah Abeka, expressed worry about the significant impact of the toothache.

According to him, when a child has a tooth problem, they find it difficult to communicate with their classmates.

He attributed it to lack of confidence and the inability to pay attention in the classroom due to stigmatization associated with such a disease.

Dr. Emmanuel Abeka advised parents to prioritize their wards’ oral health by ensuring they monitor them regularly when going to brush their teeth as well as checking their mouths to enable them to stay healthy.

“We are not preventing them from taking sweet products, but before they go to sleep, the parents must see to it that they have neatly brushed their teeth to avoid a toothache in the future,” he added.

He also entreated parents to visit dentists with their children from time to time to enable them to identify early tooth problem that may emerge for firsthand treatment.

Dr. Abeka further expressed worry over oral health statistics in Ghana where more than 70% of the population suffers from oral health issues and poor oral hygiene.

He used the opportunity and appealed to the general public to take their oral health seriously and indicated that the mouth is the gateway to the body that everybody looks at during communication.

Speaking on behalf of the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, the Sanaahene of the Traditional Area, Nana Opoku Acheampong, said they were grateful to the management of the Aura Family Dental Care for the establishment of the facility on their land, creating job opportunities for the youth in the area.

“Every Paramount Chief would be glad to see a developmental project on his land; therefore, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III has opened his doors to welcome any investor to New Juaben who wants to come and do the same and create more jobs for the youth in the area to help reduce the unemployment menace in the country,” he noted.

The Chief Executive Officer of the SOS Foundation, based in the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region, Samuel Osei Sarkodie, has revealed that over 1,700 residents of the Municipality have benefited from the Foundation’s free registration, renewal, and replacement of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards.

SOS, as he is affectionately called, noted that the Foundation has opened its doors to register the entire 40,000 population of the Municipality.

Since the commencement of the free registration, renewal, and replacement of NHIS cards on March 3, residents from Asokore, Effiduase, Oyoko, and Jumapo have all benefited from the program.

He made this known during the Jumapo free NHIS registration exercise.

According to SOS, some beneficiaries from the aforementioned communities, especially the elderly, reported that they have already started using their cards to access healthcare services without encountering challenges, and expressed gratitude for the impact the initiative has had on their lives in New Juaben North.

“From Jumapo, we will again extend the gesture to Suhyen, Asikasu, Kofikrom, and wrap up at Akwadum,” he told Kontihen Kofi Oboh.

Samuel Osei Sarkodie also thanked the residents of the area for embracing the project and getting registered.

He emphasized that this demonstrates their growing understanding of the importance of the National Health Insurance Scheme when seeking medical care at hospitals.

“The welfare of the people of New Juaben North is our topmost priority and the Foundation will continue to offer a helping hand to them when the need arises,” he assured.

The Faculty of Business Administration of Jayee University College has urged the government to adopt the Smart Shuttle Service as a measure to address human congestion in the country.

Through its research, the Faculty discovered that the inadequacy of vehicles, especially in the Greater Accra Region, is making life difficult for commuters on a daily basis. 

As a result, some drivers operating between Accra, Kasoa, and other areas have taken advantage of the situation by overcharging passengers, a development they described as very worrying. 

They made this known during their semester-based marketing research presentation on Saturday, March 21, at the College’s main campus in McCarthy Hill, Accra.

Speaking to journalists, Alexander Arhin, a student of the University, explained that their research revealed many Ghanaians want the government to purchase more buses for the Transport Ministry to end this menace.

Hence, he noted, their proposal of the Smart Shuttle Service system to the government. 

The smart shuttle buses would be stationed at vantage points in Accra and parts of Kasoa where students, workers, and traders struggle to find vehicles to their destinations. 

Mr. Arhin noted that the Smart Shuttle Service buses would operate from 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to convey commuters on time, preventing lateness to work or school.

However, after a break, operations would resume between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., and convey them back home, and close at 8:30 p.m. to enable them to have quality time with their families. 

“We believe that if the government adopts the Smart Shuttle Service, it will help reduce congestion in the Greater Accra Region and some parts of the Central Region, specifically Kasoa, and the drivers overcharging passengers will be a thing of the past,” he expressed. 

The Graduate School Coordinator of the College, Isaac Yaw Opoku-Okuampa, echoed that Ghana’s transport system posed a major challenge for its citizens over decades, and was optimistic that this business idea could help the government curb the menace. 

He further noted that most advanced countries rely on university research to solve such challenges, since governments cannot always directly engage citizens in every locality and listen to their plight.

Senior Lecturer Opoku-Okuampa therefore implored the government and private institutions to embrace the Smart Shuttle Service initiative to minimize human congestion in regional capitals, especially Greater Accra. 

“When the government or private entities implement this Smart Shuttle Service, it will not only reduce congestion in the country, but it will also create job opportunities for others, particularly the drivers, to reduce the country’s unemployment rate, which is why it must be considered,” he added.

On Friday, March 20, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Suhum Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, Lydia Ohenewaa, joined the Muslim community in her municipality to observe the nationwide Eid al-Fitr festival.

In her speech, the Suhum MCE expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Muslims for fasting and praying for the country’s progress.

“President John Mahama wants to see the youth of the country succeeding in life because if the youth have their own handiwork doing, it reduces social vices in our communities,” mentioned Lydia Ohenewaa.

She emphasized that youth development is a priority for President John Dramani Mahama, which is why he has implemented numerous programs to shape their future.


“…And one of these programs includes the Youth in Apprenticeship Program, which seeks to train youth on different skills to become self-reliant and help contribute to the development of the nation,” she stated.

Lydia Ohenewaa used the occasion to entreat the youth, especially Muslims, to participate in this initiative.

She explained that upon graduation, the government provides free start-up kits to help them establish themselves and avoid becoming burdens on their parents.

“The Suhum Municipal Assembly is ready to assist the youth in the area to get enrolled into the program and become professionals such as fashion designers, carpenters, beauticians, hairdressers, masons, among others, to help move the country forward,” she added.

The St. Peter Anglican Cathedral, Diocese of Koforidua in the Eastern Region, installed former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo as a Lay Canon of the Church on Sunday, March 22.

A lay canon is a non-ordained person given an honorary title, usually recognizing leadership in some aspect of the Church’s life, such as in Anglican dioceses.

The installation ceremony involves the bishop formally appointing the lay canon.

While lay canons do not exercise clerical powers (like presiding at Holy Communion), they may serve on the cathedral chapter, advise the bishop, and represent the church’s image.

Speaking to Journalists, the Anglican Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese,  Right Reverend Felix Odei Annancy said that  Nana Addo is an Anglican member and the Church saw the need to honor and appreciate him for contributing to the growth of the church as well as serving the nation as former President.

“It is good to honor someone alive so that the person can witness such a memorable day, enabling them to feel that their efforts, sacrifices, contributions, and commitment have been recognized while they are alive, rather than doing that for them when they are no more,” he revealed.

Rt. Rev. Odei Annancy further said he believes that former President Akufo-Addo will use his experience to help his colleagues lay canons in a diverse way of running and managing the affairs of the Church.

Former President Nana Addo thanked the Church for recognizing his contributions and efforts towards the development of the Church and honoring him.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing to serve the church with humility and integrity to lift up the image of the church to a high esteem.

The Atiwa East District Assembly in the Eastern Region has launched and distributed 10,000 broilers, known as Nkoko Nkitinkiti, to residents in the area, urging beneficiaries to make good use of the programme.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme aims at bringing back the rearing of local chickens for home consumption.

This programme was initiated by President John Dramani Mahama to encourage Ghanaians to patronize local chickens instead of foreign ones.

Speaking at the programme, District Chief Executive of the Assembly, Ernest Owusu Ntim, urged beneficiaries not to let President Mahama down, stating that state funds were used to purchase the broilers for the free distribution to ensure it meets its purpose.

Mr. Owusu Ntim stated that the beneficiaries of the first phase were chiefs, assembly members, the clergy, driver unions, MPs, security agencies, and market women in Atiwa East District.

He indicated that this is the first phase of the programme, but the second phase will include poultry farmers who would want to rear them in large quantities.

The Asamang Tamfoehene, Osaberima Kwame Koh, thanked the government for considering the health of its citizens and introducing such a programme to reduce the importation of foreign chickens into the country, which is often associated with diseases.

He stated that after rearing them, when it is time for consumption, they should be given to children to help them grow well, adding that excessive meat consumption at age 40 and above may not be good for one’s health if one wants to live long

The Oyokohene in the New Juaben Traditional Area of the Eastern Region, Nana Osei Bonsu Sempeh II, has commended the SOS Foundation for its initiative to provide free registration, renewal, and replacement services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The SOS Foundation has voluntarily enrolled residents of the New Juaben North Municipal area into the NHIS, allowing them to access medical services at any health centre nationwide when they fall ill.

Since launching this program on March 3, 2026, over 1,500 individuals from Asokore, Effiduase, and Oyoko communities have benefited.

During the community’s exercise in Oyoko, Nana Bonsu Sempeh II emphasized that health is essential for daily activities.

He referenced traditional oaths of allegiance, which include the commitment to avoid illness, illustrating the importance of good health for everyone.

“If SOS Foundation based in New Juaben North Municipality is doing free registration, renewal, and replacement of NHIS for the people to allow them to go to the hospital for medical check-ups for free to know their health status, it is a good call, and we will rally behind them to sustain the Foundation so that they can assist others who also need help,” he hinted.

The Assemblyman for the Gyamfikrom electoral area, Daniel Kankam Twumasi stated that the SOS Foundation is transforming lives in the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly, a move that influenced him to embrace and support the exercise, noting that NHIS is important for every Ghanaian.

He also indicated that the government has paid all NHIS arrears to health centres; therefore, everyone should take advantage of the free registration, as it is beneficial in many ways when seeking medical treatment.

For his part, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of the SOS Foundation, Samuel Osei Sarkodie, popularly known as SOS, thanked the Oyokohene Nana Osei Bonsu Sempeh II for recognizing their efforts to support residents of New Juaben North.

SOS, who serves as the Youth Organizer for the New Patriotic Party in New Juaben North constituency, assured the traditional leader of the Foundation’s commitment to continue empowering the youth to develop their potential and contribute to the community’s growth, development, and progress.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers’ Ladies Society (GNATLAS), located in the New Juaben block of the Eastern Region, commemorated International Women’s Day on Friday, March 13, at GNAT Hall in Galloway to celebrate the hardworking Ghanaian women, particularly female teachers. 

According to the association, women have, been the backbone of national progress and development over the decades, and therefore deserve fair treatment across all sectors. 

International Women’s Day is observed globally on March 8 each year in recognition of the efforts and contributions of women worldwide. 

The 2026 celebration was marked under the theme: “Give To Gain, Balance The Scale.” 

Speaking to Kontihen Kofi Oboh, the Coordinator of the New Juaben GNATLAS block, Grace Asantewaa Okyere commended President John Dramani Mahama for appointing Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President. 

“Others include Patience Baffoe Bonnie as the Director General of Prisons, Danielle Mawusi Ntow Sarpong as the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, and Lydia Yaako Donkor as Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, and this demonstrates his commitment to empower women,” she mentioned. 

Ms. Asantewaa Okyere further called on the government, led by President Mahama, to continue supporting women and to help address the gender equality gap. 

The New Juaben North Municipal Education Director, Hilda Amegatcher, also emphasized the role of women in nurturing children to become productive citizens who contribute meaningfully to national development. 

“A lot of women in Ghana today engage in different jobs to get money to support their husbands in taking care of their children because they have realized that men go through a lot of challenges, hence their assistance to reduce their burden, which is why they have to be celebrated to let them know their relentless efforts are recognized,” she opined.
