The Eastern Regional Population Officer of the National Population Council, Mr. Isaac Ter-Ibinibe Sopelle says majority of Ghanain women don’t know their rights, especially those living in the villages due to lack of education.
“As a result, many men encounter on that to maltreat them, should they be well educated and know their right and choices this wouldn’t happen to them”.
“when women are educated they will be empowered and get to know their rights and choices in life” he stressed.
Moreover, he cited our dear mothers and sisters from the northern part of Ghana as victims of such circumstances since their husbands controls them on the do’s and don’t in their marriages to the extent that should one be tasked for a duty at the absence of her husband she won’t hesitate because of fear instilled in them by their latters.

Mr. Isaac Sopelle made these known to Kingdom FM’s KONTIHEN KOFI OBOH in an interview after the 2021 World Population Day Anniversary engagement with the media on the theme: “Prioritising Reproductive Health is an Answer to Right and Choices “.
He indicated that, World’s Population Day is an annual event which occurs on July 11 of every year that has become a platform in seeking attention on the global trends and their implications for development.
He therefore advised all men to come to their senses that, women are part and parcel of them hence, the need to accord them with maximum respect is key and significant.
Eastern Regional Director for Department of Gender, Mrs. Juliana Abbeyquaye also said, women are going through a lot of challenges in their marriages which every individualistic must help in the assisting of their safety.
She adds, “when a lady is being raped what come into the minds of a lot of people are; what was she wearing or what did she do alone in the darkness around that time. We have to come to the stage where women or ladies can freely pass anywhere and feel comfortable.
This, Mrs. Abbeyquaye indicated that, for medical reasons doctors have schooled many women not to give birth to more than 6 or 7 children but they’re afraid to inform their husbands due to the fear factor in them.
Adding, consequently; they will forced themselves to give birth to more than their strength which sometimes during delivering, they do loose their lives at the labour stage.
Reproductive Health Right; she says, women should be allowed to make a choice on number of children they can give birth to based on their health conditions but fumes how Ghanain men will not agree to that, a situation she described as pathetic.
Furthermore, the Eastern Regional statistician for National Population Council, Mr. Bright Walornyo Neku noted how successful this year’s population and housing census has been indicating that they deployed over 6,000 enumerators across the region for the exercise.

“Our enumerators did a great work by enumerating over 98% of persons living in the region” he added.
Furthermore, Mr. Walornyo took the opportunity and called on Ghanains whose structure was captured during the listing and chalking but has still not be enumerated to call or go to any of their Municipal or District offices in the region to get themselves enumerated since the theme of this year’s exercise is ‘you count, get counted.
