The Vice Principal of Nurses and Midwives Training College in Koforidua in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Dr. Mrs. Phyllis Abrah has indicate, Nurses and Midwives have demonstrated that given the needed education, can deliver tremendously to support the health system in the country.

This, according to her, a study conducted in Europe, a 10% increase in the number of nurses with a bachelor’s degree is related with a 7% reduction in mortality.

Something she admitted have demonstrated how patients had improved health outcomes, including a considerable reduction in mortality.

Dr. Mrs. Abrah adds, if we want to achieve the universal health care, then the Ghana Gov’t must invest in Nurses and Midwives who are expert in infection control, infectious diseases, and many other areas.

“We must also remove the evident impediment to the advancement of nursing and midwifery education in our country’s health sector.”

She made these call during the Launching of the Eastern Regional International Nurses and Midwives Week on Friday, May 27, 2022 at Nsawam Adoagyire, with the theme: “NURSES AND MIDWIVES: A VOICE TO LEAD- INVEST IN NURSING AND RESPECT RIGHT TO SECURE GLOBAL HEALTH,”

She also noted that another area of concern is investing in nursing jobs, access to healthcare is essential for society to be safe, secure, prosperous, and equitable, but it can’t be done without enough nurses and midwives to deliver the necessary treatment.

On behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, the MCE for Nsawam Adoagyire Municipal Assembly, Isaac Kwadwo Boabeng said, it is time for practitioners in the noble profession to reflect on activities over the period: the challenges and opportunities it presented, how to improve upon their services going forward in order to preserve lives and built confidence in their patients.

“The relevance of the one week celebration can’t be overemphasized, and the importance of the nursing profession has been reflective in the recent fight against COVID-19 as well as working tirelessly to save and protect lives in our various communities,” he hinted.

In addition, the Eastern Regional Chairman for Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Rev. Hayford Laryea expressed worried at which the well trained Ghanaian health professionals are traveling abroad to seek greene pastures.

He observed that more than 2,500 nurses have left the shores of the country, a situation he described as very disturbing.

Thus, Rev. Hayford Laryea projected a likelihood of shortage of nurses and midwives in the country in year’s to come if leaders don’t address the menace.
