A former Assistant Secretary for the New Patriotic Party in New Juaben North in the Eastern Region, Richard Antwire has opened up on why he redrawn his candidature from the contest
He explained that he prepared himself well for the parliamentary primaries but two candidates from Oyoko [ himself and Philip Twum] showed interest in contesting the New Juaben North Parliamentary seat because their sitting Member of Parliament, Nana Adjei Boateng did not seek re-election.
He said that in this case, he concluded that Oyoko cannot present two candidates at the same time hence his decision to bow out peacefully.
According to Richard Atwire, the residents of Oyoko said it was their time to occupy the Parliamentary seat, therefore they should give only one candidate so he pleaded with his brother Philip Twum to step down to enable him to support him win the seat because he has worked in the Constituency for over 20 years and he is well known by many people but he [Philip Twum] could not agree.
“So when I asked him to step down and he refused I had no option but to reconsider my decision to join the Parliamentary primaries race; hence my bowing out of the competition”, he revealed.
Richard Antwire made this known to Kingdom FM’s KONTIHEN KOFI OBOH in an exclusive interview after their Parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Meanwhile, Philip Twum had only 3 votes after the elections.
He further added that he was not afraid to go into the contest with his Brother Philip Twum, but the research he hired people to do for him indicated if Philip Twum could not step down and go into the elections it was not going to help him.
He then stated that now that the delegates of New Juaben North have decided and elected Nana Osei Adjei as their new Parliamentary Candidate they are all going to work tirelessly to support him retain the seat for NPP in the area.
“I have called and congratulated my brother Nana Osei Adjei for emerging victorious and he has also asked me to come and help him and I have agreed to work with him to ensure we maintain the New Juaben North parliamentary seat for NPP,” he revealed.
At the end of the primaries, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong had 183 while Nana Osei Adjei polled 253 votes to emerge victorious.
The other three candidates were Samson Kwesi Annor with 2 votes, Philip Twum Yeboah with 3 votes, and Joseph Osei Djaba gained 47 votes.
