
The Fanteakwa South Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region successfully observed the nationwide Green Ghana Day on Friday, June 7, 2024.
The program held at Akyem Juaso had in attendance the Member of Parliament of the area, Kofi Okyere Agyekum together with staff of the Kibi Goldfields Company Limited.
Representatives made up of students from Osino Presbyterian Senior High Technical School also joined the national exercise for tree seedling planting.
The district as part of its efforts to complement the national exercise planted 65,000 tree seedlings out of a total number of 700,000 targeted by the region.
Speaking at the program, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Fanteakwa South, Ernest Ofosu, was full of praises to President Akufo-Addo for making the tree planting initiative possible and an annual occasion.
According to him, the decision stems from the climate changes in the country due to the activities of man to avert its negative consequences to human lives.
“Most of the trees we planted in the last three years have survived and this shows a positive sign that should everybody get involved, we can make Ghana green again to protect our destroyed forest, lands, and water bodies,” he opined.
The Member of Parliament of the area, Kofi Okyere Agyekum commended the Kibi Goldfield Company Limited for rightfully engaging in mining in the area to reclaim most of the lands and release them to the Forestry Commission to plant trees to save lives.
Kofi Agyekum underscores the importance of tree planting in our daily activities, stressing it is the collective responsibility of all to plant at least one tree in their various homes.
He entreated the Forestry Commission and the general public to take good care of the trees it planted in 2021 to date to enable achieve its purpose.
In his submission, the Deputy Managing Director for the Kibi Goldfield Mining Company Limited, Kofi Darfuor Darteh mentioned that they have released 20 acres of reclaimed lands in Akyem Juaso for the National Tree Planting program.
He noted that, since their inception in 2012, they had been committed to responsible and sustainable mining practices, indicating their commitment goes beyond mere compliance.
Kofi Darteh added that each one had a role to play in protecting the precision resources that sustain life on earth by planting trees which will not only apply to investment for the future but also for the future generations.
