Youth Urge To Venture Into Coconut And Oil Palm Plantations For Impactful Life

As part of the government’s efforts to reduce poverty among farmers in the country, Management of the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has distributed 40,000 oil palm and coconut seedlings to some 70 farmers in the area.

The seedlings received by the farmers comprise 20,000 coconut and oil palm seedlings each. The initiative forms part of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) government measures to help Ghanaian farmers channel into other cash crops that will fetch them money instead of relying solely on Cocoa farming.

Records indicate that since 2023 to date, the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly has distributed 60,000 [ 21,000 oil palm and 39,000 coconut seedlings] respectively to farmers in the municipality.

Speaking to Kingdom FM’s KONTIHEN KOFI OBOH about the life changer initiative, the Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, Dr. Alhaji Umar Babs Kofi Bodinga expressed his excitement over the impact the program has had on the lives of the Farmers the area.

He then entreated the youth to embrace coconut and oil palm farming to make life meaningful for their future because it comes in return huge sums of earnings.

Dr. Umar Bodinga also pleaded with the Chiefs and Opinion leaders to demarcate some portion of their lands for the youth to enable them to venture into farming since the development of the country depends on agriculture apart from education.

According to Nartey Anthony, the Agric Director for the Assembly all the beneficiaries were from Abuakwa North and they have been monitoring their activities to ensure they use the seedlings received for the right purposes.

“The coconut and oil palm seedlings grow well in the area that’s why we choose them over other cash crops such as mango, cashew nut, Shea butter, etc,” he stated.
