The Eastern Regional Security Council engaged Journalists in the Region ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The meeting aimed at working collaboratively to promote peace before, during, and after the December 7 polls.
Addressing the journalists at the Regional Coordinating Council on Thursday, November 6, 2024, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, who doubles as the Chairman for the Security Council in the Region, said that every 3 months, they meet and deliberate on the issues that have come to their table and find solutions to them.
“In our meetings, we realized that there was tension in the Region so quickly we mobilized ourselves to go and consult with all the 11 Paramount Chiefs, Chief Imams, Rev. Ministers, and opinion leaders in the Region to see how best we could do to calm nerves down to have a successful election,” he said.
Kwame Acheampong added after engaging with the aforementioned personalities, they assured them of preaching peace in their jurisdiction to avoid any unforeseen chaos.
He underscores that the media play a key role in such situations, hence meeting them to use their medium to educate those who are peeved to exercise restraint and desist from any form of act that may cause mayhem during the election.
Mr. Acheampong mentioned that Ghana’s hallmark in elections is well-known across the world, and thus, every Ghanaian citizen must do well to protect such legacy.
“The December polls are very important to the country, that is why we are touring the Region to ensure there is peace and unity among the people irrespective of their political affiliation,” he opined.
For his part, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Twumasi Ankrah, said that measures have been put in place to ensure the elections in the region are organized in a peaceful atmosphere.
“We will dispatch our patrol and rapid respond team to the places identified as hotspots to ensure violence-free in those areas,” he stressed.
