The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has distributed a variety of items to Persons living With Disabilities (PWDs), allowing them to sell the items and use the proceeds to support themselves.
The items included groceries, assorted soft drinks, bags of charcoal, hair dryers, a bale of secondhand clothing, as well as bags of maize and rice, among others.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Assembly, Dr. Alhaji Umar Babs Bodinga, said that President Akufo-Addo and his Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, now the flagbearer of the NPP, are committed to the welfare of persons living with disabilities, which is why they are supporting such initiatives to bring smiles to their faces.
Dr. Bodinga recounted that they had previously given 30 bags of charcoal to one disabled woman, enabling her to sell them and use the proceeds to support her family. She made a substantial profit from this initiative. Since its inception in 2017, this program has significantly improved the lives of many persons living with disabilities in the Municipality.
Dr. Bodinga then urged Ghanaians to prioritize the welfare of PWDs and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections, to continue these programs and assist people in need, preventing them from resorting to begging on the streets.
In addition, the Assembly also provided equipment, fish feed, and fingerlings to 50 youth who had completed a one-week training program in the aquaculture business within the area. These efforts are part of the government’s initiatives to create job opportunities for the youth in the Municipality and bolster the local economy.
The Director of Social Welfare and Community Development for Abuakwa North, Nimako Yiamoah, stated that this is the 8th time the government has disbursed items to persons with disabilities in the Municipality.
He explained that the goal of this initiative is to help PWDs set up small businesses, enabling them to earn a living and avoid begging on the streets.
Yiamoah then admonished the 20 beneficiaries to make the best use of the items provided, with the hope that they would establish additional businesses and provide employment opportunities for others.
He added that such efforts would contribute to reducing the unemployment rate in the country.
