The Abuakwa North Chairman for the New Patriotic Party in the Eastern Region, Alhaji Seidu Ibrahim, affectionately called Alhaji Opass has called on the party leadership as soon as possible to have a critical look at the polling station executives’ structure and abolish it.
He believes that the polling station executives’ structure was one of the key factors that contributed to their defeat in the just-ended 2024 general elections.
According to him, Ghanaians were looking at the kind of items and huge sums of amount of money the polling station executives bring home when electing the Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates for the party, and they got peeved.
Alhaji Opass said this makes the work very difficult for them to convince people to go out and vote for NPP, stating that if approached and asked them to vote for NPP, they also demanded something, hence the low turnout, especially from their two main strongholds such as the Ashanti and Eastern Regions respectively.
“I don’t see why polling station executives should be made delegates and be given money to choose a leader for the party leaving other party faithful to go hungry,” he added.
The Chairman then stressed that if the party can’t scrap the polling station executives structure then they should open the electoral college for all card-bearing members of the party to enable them to take part in the electoral process of electing leaders and see if the aspirants can give everybody money to vote for him or her to become their leader and this will bring peace amongst aggrieved members.
“If we do it that way, those who deserve to occupy that position will be voted for to become the leader of the party, and when general elections are due Ghanaians will come out in their numbers with good hearts and vote for that person because they prefer him or to become their leader, not the delegates choice,” he opined.
He further revealed that they worked hard to retain power but unfortunately, things didn’t go the way they wanted.
Alhaji Opass added that the results they garnered from the 2024 election across the country were very appalling, and they are going back to the drawing board to correct their errors and bounce back stronger in 2028 to recapture power again.
