The Eastern Regional Focal Person in charge of Maternal Health, Doris Darkoa Mantey, has revealed that the region recorded 18 maternal deaths from January to May 2025.
According to her, investigations show that most of these deaths occurred at prayer camps where women preferred to hospitals, a situation she described as devastating.
Madam Mantey noted that men of God are not experts in childbirth compared to midwives. The midwives, she stressed are well-trained for complications, not for normal cases, which is why every pregnant women needs to go and deliver at the hospital for their safety.
She made this known in Koforidua during the celebration of the International Day of the Midwife. It was celebrated under the theme: Midwives: Critical In Every Crisis.
Madam Mantey hinted that it is not their wish to perform surgery on pregnant women, but rather to enable them to deliver successfully to save both the mother and the child. Therefore, she urged people to bear with them.

“Those who are saying they don’t want a knife to touch them when going to deliver should know every situation and what it demands but the most important thing is that at the end of the day, you deliver peacefully and go home,” she explained.
She used the occasion to applaud Ghanaian midwives for their dedication and commitment to saving lives in the country.
She further admonished them not to let money control them in the course of their duty, indicating that their work is a calling and that they should continue serving the country with a clean heart.
The National Public Relations Officer (P.R.O) of the Midwives Society, Augustine Adu, who was the guest of honor for the program, underscored the crucial roles played by midwives in the health sector.
Against this backdrop, he suggested that midwives should be properly cared for in the country, proposing an honorarium as a form of motivation.

He cited the global COVID-19 pandemic era in 2020, when midwives stood their ground and risked their lives to save many souls.
Mr. Adu noted that as they commemorate another year of the special day, they deserve appreciation and celebration from Ghanaians to highlight their massive contributions to the country.
This program was spearheaded by the Eastern Regional Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) under the leadership of Rev. Hayford Laryea, the Regional Chairman of the association.
They presented awards to some selected hardworking individual midwives in the region and urged them to continue providing quality healthcare services to their clients.
