Former Minister for Works and Housing, Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, has thrown his support behind the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for taking the bold decision to hold its presidential primaries in January 2026 to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general election.
According to him, starting the electoral process from the top is a step in the right direction, as the party currently faces bitterness and apathy.
He believes electing the presidential candidate early will help address these challenges and unite the party before the December 7, 2028, general elections.
The lawyer, an immediate past Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region, further stated that this directive by the party’s hierarchy is intended to give the chosen flagbearer ample time to prepare and defeat the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I don’t want to believe that it should be usual business when approaching elections, then the party would rush to find the leader who would help us to win the election, so what is being done is in the right direction and our leadership deserves a thumbs up,” he told Kontihen Kofi Oboh.
Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea also questioned who among the presidential aspirants would be at a disadvantage.
He explained that the decision provides equal time and opportunity to all interested candidates to campaign.
He added that the delegates voting in January 2026 are from within the NPP, not the NDC, and therefore no aspirant should be afraid of the contest.
The former MP then declared his support for the candidature of former Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing confidence in his ability to retain the NPP flagbearer position.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia has already been marketed to Ghanaians and stands tall among all the aspirants.
Atta Akyea praised Dr. Bawumia’s experience, describing him as a wise and civilized economist who served under President Akufo-Addo for many years.
He asserted that, given his experience, Dr. Bawumia would avoid the mistakes of the past if elected President in 2028.
“It baffles me when I hear people saying a Muslim can’t govern Ghana, meanwhile we have had Christians as our Presidents and they performed abysmally, thence God can use Dr. Bawumia to change the fortunes of this country if he wins the presidential seat in 2028,” he said.
