A 25-year-old woman, Vera Asare, has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly pouring a substance suspected to be acid on her 27-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Omane, while he was asleep on November 29, 2024.
Daniel later died from his injuries on July 25, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The tragic incident occurred at Bonya, in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region, where the late Daniel Omane resided.
Vera Asare is currently standing trial before the Koforidua Court. Her case was officially opened at the District Magistrate Court in Koforidua, presided over by Her Worship Nana Ama Depaa Fynn, Esq, on Monday, September 8.
Following investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the evidence gathered confirmed that the substance poured on Daniel Omane was acidic.
According to the law, had Daniel died instantly from the acid attack, Vera Asare would have been charged with murder. However, due to the delayed death, she has been charged with manslaughter.
As the District Magistrate Court lacks jurisdiction over such cases, it has referred the matter to the Koforidua High Court for continuation.
The Koforidua High Court is scheduled to commence hearings on October 13 as the suspect has been remanded in custody pending the outcome of the trial.
The Omane family, grieving the loss of their son, has expressed their hope that the law will take its full course.
Even though Daniel left behind a 3-year-old daughter with the accused person, the family insists that justice must prevail.
Emmanuel Kofi Boateng, brother of the deceased, appealed to the court to ensure justice is served so that Daniel Omane’s soul may rest peacefully in the bosom of his creator.
He emphasized that although their loved one cannot be brought back, justice is the only path toward calming nerves down and a necessary deterrent to others.
