Management of the Akyem Adonten Senior High School (ADHIS), situated in Akyem Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of Eastern Region, has commended President John Dramani Mahama, for enrolling its institution in the Free Senior High School policy.
ADHIS, formerly ‘Extramural’ was established in 2001 is one of the best-performing private SHS in the Eastern Region.
The Free SHS policy, since its inception in 2017, has solely been beneficial for the government’s second-cycle schools.
Fast forward, going into the 2024 general election, President John Mahama, the then flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), promised to include private SHS into the policy if he became President.
To kickstart the implementation of this, about 70 private SHS nationwide have been enrolled in this initiative, of which the Eastern Region had six slots, including ADHIS.
Meanwhile, students to be posted to these schools will be day students.
Speaking in a recent interview, Director of ADHIS, Christiana Obenewaa, said they are expecting 400 new entrants, where some had come for their prospectus and are waiting for the school to reopen in October to begin admitting them.
Madam Obenewaa stated that they have boarding facilities to admit students who don’t stay within the school’s catchment area to enable them to have a sound mind to study.
She further advised beneficiary schools to make good use of this opportunity that the government has given them, advocating good education and instilling discipline among students to open doors for other schools that are yet to be enrolled next year.
Assistant Headmaster of the School in charge of academics, Joshua Ofori, disclosed that the institution has secured first position in mathematics for the past 6 years in the region and attributed it to hard work and teamwork.
According to him, academic excellence of students doesn’t come on a silver platter, but it takes teamwork of the teaching body to achieve these results that have today made them part of the Free SHS policy in Abuakwa North Municipality.
He indicated that they would continue to uphold and maintain their academic excellence to honor President John Dramani Mahama.
