Coup D’etat Retards African Development… Osaberima Darko

Osaberima Otu Darko, Osinohene.

The Osinohene, Osaberima Otu Darko, has stressed that a coup d’état is not something Africa should entertain.

According to him, coups d’état have caused many African countries to lag in development.

Osaberima Otu Darko explained that some Western countries are also facing worse situations than African nations, yet we have not seen their militaries attempting to overthrow elected presidents because they understand the consequences of military rule.

The Osinohene said that a coup d’état is not a solution to Africa’s problems. He argued that if a military officer believes a democratically elected president is underperforming or associated with corruption, the officer should resign from the service, form a political party, contest elections, and if successful, be entrusted with the country, rather than using weapons to overthrow a civilian government.

Osaberima Darko admitted that all African countries which have overthrown their elected presidents, including the recent case in Guinea-Bissau were facing similar challenges. However, he emphasized that this does not justify the military taking power from civilian governments.

“The military is being resourced with guns to use them to protect the people and to ensure there is peace in the country, but not to use them for staging a coup d’etat to snatch power from the incumbent president,” he stated.

The Osinohene further condemned military actions and urged politicians to listen to the plight of their people and address their concerns to prevent such occurrences.

“The military staged a coup d’etat against the elected President when there is hunger and hardship in the country, and the politicians are amassing wealth and living a luxurious lifestyle. It is about time they advise themselves from such a greedy act and prioritize the welfare of their citizens first before anything else and serve them with integrity to avoid the wrath of the military,” he recounted.

Osaberima Otu Darko admonished African leaders, especially  Ghana, to create more job opportunities so that when young people graduate from tertiary institutions, they can move directly into the workforce.

He mentioned that in Ghana, for instance, many young people are engaging in social vices such as galamsey and illicit drug abuse because, after completing school, they cannot find work.

He stressed that this must be treated as a national concern since it poses a threat to the security system.

He made this known to Kontihen Kofi Oboh when speaking to the recent coup d’etat in Guinea-Bissau, where their President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, was captured by the Head of the Military Office of the Presidency, Brigadier General Dinis Incanha, on November 26, 2025.
