The Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) Foundation, Ghana, partnered with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service to educate schoolchildren on 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The beneficial pupils are students of the Trinity Presbyterian Model School in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region.
This program is held every year from November 25, the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day.
The “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” emphasizes the growing threats of online abuse under the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Children.”
The initiative aimed to create a safer online environment and encourage responsible digital behavior, with a particular focus on protecting women and children from digital abuse.
Speaking to journalists, the Senior Manager for MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe, mentioned that creating an awareness campaign such as this one is crucial for promoting a safer digital space and encouraging people to come together to end digital violence, especially women.
Mr. Kuzoe further explained that his outfit has realized they should not always be talking to women about Gender-Based Violence, which was why the Foundation saw the need to educate young boys and girls about it, to enable them to refrain from such acts and create a conducive environment for all.
They included educational sessions and debates at schools for both boys and girls, focusing on cyber hygiene, identifying harmful behavior, and reporting.
The participants of the Trinity Presbyterian Model School were divided into two groups and asked to debate on “Is it necessary to teach both girls and boys the same thing in school?”
After the debate, the Principal of the Trinity Presbyterian Model School, Madam Vivian Obuobisa Darko, praised her pupils for debating extensively on the matter and coming out with contributions and suggestions to combat Gender-Based Violence in Ghana.
She said the outstanding performance of the schoolchildren demonstrates that the Ghana Education Service (GES) has a great future to nurture more talented children for the country.
