The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Patrick Boison, called on the government to revisit the Single Spine Salary Structure implementation 15 years ago.

Speaking at GNAT’s Regional Delegates Conference on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Kibi Presbyterian College of Education in Abuakwa South Municipality, Boison expressed concern over the delayed rollout of the promised deprived area allowance.

He noted that many educators working in remote communities continue to face harsh conditions with limited support.

He also highlighted issues with the inconsistent release of capitation grants and subsidies, which are essential to running pre-tertiary institutions effectively.

Mr. Boison cited the lack of offices to assist School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) as a major challenge in achieving targeted educational outcomes.

Stressing the importance of teachers in shaping future leaders and contributing to national development, he argued that educators deserve fair treatment and stronger support.

The conference was held under the theme “Educating an African Fit for the 21st Century: The Role of Policy Makers and Unions in Ghana.”

He reminded delegates of the conference that served as a platform for GNAT leadership, members, and staff to evaluate their programmes and chart a path forward as the core of all discussions and resolutions.

Former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region, Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, has debunked claims that the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the 2024 election was caused by its flagbearer, former Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.

He cited findings from the party’s committee established to investigate the electoral outcome, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Right Rev. Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, which disproved the assertion.

Mr. Atta Akyea, who also served as Minister of Works and Housing, alleged that the commission’s report pointed to the governance system under former President Akufo-Addo as the primary cause of the defeat.

“All those engaging in propaganda that a vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a vote for Akufo-Addo would be ashamed because Nana Addo is no more and I wonder how their next actions will be,” he stated.

He stressed that no amount of misinformation could damage the reputation or legacy of Dr. Bawumia in Ghanaian politics, expressing confidence in the electorate’s ability to discern truth from falsehood.

He explained that serving under a superior limits one’s influence over national decision-making, a challenge Bawumia reportedly faced while Vice President.

“Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has a brilliant idea which could have been used to change things for Ghanaians, but it didn’t materialize because the power was vested in Akufo-Addo. However, now the narrative has changed, and if he becomes the substantive President, Ghanaians would see his handwriting all over the country,” noted the former Abuakwa South MP.

He further advocated for the party to allow Dr. Bawumia to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, describing him as the best candidate to reclaim the presidency from the opposition NDC.

The Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa South Constituency in the Eastern Region, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang has underscored the importance of the flagship Free Senior High School (FSHS) education policy to Ghanaian students.

“There is no question that Ghana has made significant strides in expanding access to education over the past decade. The FSHS policy, a flagship intervention of the government has altered the trajectory of countless households,” he said.

According to Dr. Agyeman, the Free Senior High School education policy has restored hope where poverty once threatened to choke potentials.

The Abuakwa South lawmaker indicated that today, more children, especially from rural and disadvantaged communities have accesses to secondary education than at any point in Ghana’s history.

He was speaking at the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ 7th Quadrennial of the 54th Eastern Regional Delegates conference held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Kibi Presbyterian College of Education in the Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly as a guest speaker for the program.

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang then assured Ghanaians that FSHS is a legacy that no future administration can ignore or cancel.

He emphasised and postulated that the policy has come to stay.

To reinforce its commitment to environmental stewardship, Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) Ghana has unveiled a four-pronged sustainability framework aimed at preserving natural resources and fostering responsible growth.

The initiative, which aligns with global climate efforts, was presented during the company’s annual Media and Stakeholder engagement in Koforidua on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

The Senior Manager in charge of Corporate Communication of the Mobile Telephone Network, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, said many developments worldwide have negatively impacted the environment.

According to her, although a lot of people do not believe in climate change, bushfires, illegal mining activities, and water pollution have compromised the land.

A development, she added motivated MTN Ghana to initiate these four sustainability plans to safeguard the environment as well as sustain lives and businesses.

“We all have a role to play in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to protect our natural resources. Our 4 main pillars are, doing for planet, doing for people, doing for growth, and doing it right,” Georgina Fiagbenu mentioned.

This year’s engagement served as a platform to highlight the company’s infrastructure projects, programs, and policies contributing to national development.

According to her, environmental protection is a collective responsibility of everybody.

She further revealed the introduction of the ‘project zero’ aimed to protect the planet by reducing the emissions from ‘vehicles, generators, and factories to enable the country to enjoy a cleaner environment.’

Madam Asare Fiagbenu stressed the usage of more solar power for their operations to curb the over-reliance on electricity.

She also asserted that the move to opt for solar power was to reduce carbon emissions to protect the environment.

The Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) has held its 2025 Media and Stakeholder Engagement in Koforidua aims to offer a platform for the telecom giant to showcase its contributions to Ghana’s progress across various sectors.

According to the company, it has undertaken 173 projects this year alone, including 90 educational initiatives, 57 health-related projects, and 18 economic empowerment programs targeting both men and women.

These interventions, they said, aim to ease the burden on central government resources.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Richard Appiah, raised concerns about the security of Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors in the region.

He noted that police have been engaging with vendors on the importance of adopting personal security measures at their places of operation.

ACP Appiah added that some vendors behave in ways that attract criminal attention and urged them to avoid counting money publicly and recommended working in enclosed spaces to secure their safety and protection so that nobody can enter and rob them.

He further advised all MoMo operators to keep contact numbers of the Ghana Police Service readily available, stating that if they notice any suspicious individuals near their premises, they should quickly contact them to come to their rescue.

The Channel Manager for Mobile Money Limited at MTN Ghana, Faisal Ali, cautioned Ghanaians against entertaining unsolicited calls related to their transactions.

He emphasized that the only number to receive a call from MTN is 0244300000 adding that adhering to this advice would protect users from fraud.

“We have put in place all the necessary measures internally to ensure that the platform is safe through the supervision of the Bank of Ghana,” he noted.

Faisal Ali also revealed that MTN has partnered with and provided financial support to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to help combat fraudulent activities within the system.

The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, the Education Minister, Haruna  Iddrisu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund, Dr. Saadija Shiraz, have launched the ‘No Fees Stress’ program at the SDA College of Education in Koforidua, Asokore of the Eastern Region.

This policy aimed to absorbing the fees of the first-year students who have gained admission into the public institutions by the central government and to give financial relief to their parents.

Speaking at the launching, President Mahama said, these policy will ensure that the geographical location gender, disability or social economic background will no longer determine who can sit in tertiary lecture hall.

According to him, across the world countries are embracing the value of publicly supporting tertiary education. In Germany, Norway, Finland among others, the public universities charge no fees and Ghana can also emulate.

He then entreated the Ghanaian students to cease this opportunity to focus, excell and commit themselves in serving Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama again admonished the tertiary institutions to implement this policy with transparency, compassion and excellence and making this as model of effective public delivery.

He mentioned that most of the students when gain admission into tertiary education due to financial constraints they are being denied such an opportunity, hence the implementation of the No Fees Stress Policy.

The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Fuseni Suraji, has said the Police administration has taken cognizance of the government’s avowed aim of implementing the 24-hour economy.

“For such a monumental policy to be implemented successfully, the Ghana Police Service has a cardinal role to play,” he noted.

According to him, the Police would be expected to provide the needed security to ensure that the citizenry, as well as workers, are well protected at all times to go about their legitimate economic and social pursuits without undue hindrances by societal delinquents and avowed agents of violence, crimes, and lawlessness.

COP Fuseini Suraji mentioned this at the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters while recruiting the 233 trained Police constables in the region. Meanwhile, 2,705 Police constables across the country passed out today.

He revealed that in line with its proactive measures, the Police Administration has established *a new Unit at the Police Headquarters known as the 24-hour Economy Security Secretariat* to oversee the security coordination of implementing the 24-hour Economy.

COP Mohammed Fuseini  Suraji, who serves as Director General of the National Patrol Department, added that the country’s reliance on the Ghana  Police Service for their role in promoting peace, security, and social cohesion necessary for national development can’t be overemphasized.

Therefore, He implored the newly recruited police constables to exhibit a level of competence that complements the confidence that the citizens repose in them.

He then reminded them to note that the badge on their chest wasn’t a license to intimidate but a pledge to serve with humility, courage, and honour.

“Let your conduct, both on and off duty, reflect the high standards the service expects of you and the hopes the Nation has in you,” he advised them.

Rev. Eric Yeboah, District Minister of Adweso Trinity Presbyterian Church of Ghana in New Juaben South Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region has offered advice to Ghanaian youth nationwide, particularly the fresh BECE graduates, urging them to persevere and work diligently to attain their goals.

As they navigate their educational journey to the next level of their academics, Rev. Yeboah encouraged students to excel in their studies, inspiring others through their academic pursuits. He also stressed that those undergoing vocational skills training should strive to excel, applying their skills to achieve their dreams.

Rev. Eric Yeboah was speaking at the 17th annual graduation and Thanksgiving ceremony for the 2025 batch of students who graduated from the School.

A total of 110 students comprising 42 boys and 68 girls, successfully sat for the 2025 BECE.

The theme for the celebration was “Celebrating The End Of One Chapter And The Start Of Another”.

Speaking on the theme, Rev. Eric Yeboah underscored the essence of graduation as a time of transition, growth, and possibility and however, encouraging the graduants to be mindful of their family background and heritage, which should inspire them to excel and make their community proud.

He commended the parents, teachers, and government organizations for their tireless efforts in guiding the students to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed. He noted that their collective efforts would contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and societal progress.

The Rev. Minister then cautioned them to be aware of the pressures from friends, parents, family, loved ones, and society, and to make positive choices that would impact their lives.

He acknowledged that life is not always fair, but urged the students to remain committed and determined to overcome the challenges they would face as they progress to the next stage of their educational journey.

Rev. Yeboah advised the students to study diligently, shun social vices, and focus on achieving their goals. He challenged them to live up to the expectations of their parents, the nation, and Almighty God, assuring them that they would be favored.

Mrs. Vivian Obuobisa-Darko, the Headmistress of Trinity Presbyterian Model School, proudly observed that the vision of the school’s founding fathers – “to establish a quality public model school that stands the test of time” – has not only been realized but has also exceeded expectations.

According to her, the theme aptly captures the essence of closure, reflection, and new beginnings, while the accompanying phrase “The Best Is Yet To Come” injects a sense of optimism and promise, inspiring hope and anticipation for a brighter future.

Mrs. Obuobisa-Darko noted that the school has maintained a track record of academic excellence, with no student failing the BECE examinations over the past 17 years since its establishment.

With fervent hope for their success, Mrs. Obuobisa-Darko offered a heartfelt prayer, seeking God’s guidance and blessings as the students embark on the next stage of their educational journey. She prayed that God should grant them wisdom, knowledge, and strength to excel in their pursuits.

However, the outgoing Students’ Representative Council (SRC) formally handed over the mantle of leadership to the newly elected executive members to aquire power and energy to marked the beginning of a new era, as the incoming leaders prepared to strengthen and steer the affairs of the school.

On behalf of the school, the Headmistress, Ms. Vivian Obuobisa-Darko, in collaboration with Rev. Eric Yeboah, the District Minister of Adweso Trinity Presbyterian Church of Ghana presented certificates of testimonial to the 110 graduates from Trinity Presbyterian Model School as recognition honored the students’ hard work and dedication throughout their 8-year journey.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region, Adu Sarpong Nana Addo Aikins Junior, has taken a swipe at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that their decision to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections will not disrupt the work of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

He stated that all indications point to the likely election of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer in January 2026, a move that would allow him to begin his campaign ahead of the December 7, 2028 elections.

However, he emphasized that this development will not interfere with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to delivering meaningful policies and transformational development.

He was speaking during the inauguration of the Abuakwa South Smart Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Cities Implementation Committee, Addo Aikins stressed that President Mahama remains focused on implementing life-changing programs and initiatives that will benefit all Ghanaians.

He highlighted the president’s commitment to equitable national development, including the completion of stalled projects initiated under the previous NPP administration.

He cautioned against politicizing infrastructure, warning that such attitudes hinder national progress.

Addo Aikins maintained that while the NPP may go ahead with early campaign activities, the NDC will continue working hard to address the country’s challenges, confident that in 2028, Ghanaians will vote for a party that offers hope and improves their standard of living.

Jennifer Acquah, a Senior Development Planning Officer at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, reaffirmed the Ministry’s collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and UN-Habitat, with support from the Norwegian Government.

She said the goal is to help assemblies like Abuakwa South to accelerate progress toward achieving the SDGs.

She urged members of the newly inaugurated committee to approach their responsibilities with dedication and a sense of purpose, stressing that their efforts would be central to the successful implementation of the program in Kyebi.

The Kyebihene, Osaberima Marfo Kwabrane, also encouraged the committee to work diligently toward the area’s development.

He noted that many security personnel serving in Abuakwa South lack permanent housing and that the Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has allocated land for the construction of residential facilities to support their welfare and operational efficiency.

He appealed to the MCE to consider using part of the funding from the Smart Cities project to build accommodation for security personnel to ensure they are well-positioned to safeguard the municipality.
