Woman Accused In Fatal Acid Attack Charged With Manslaughter, Family Demands Justice

A 25-year-old woman, Vera Asare, has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly pouring a substance suspected to be acid on her 27-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Omane, while he was asleep on November 29, 2024.

Daniel later died from his injuries on July 25, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The tragic incident occurred at Bonya, in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region, where the late Daniel Omane resided.

Vera Asare is currently standing trial before the Koforidua Court. Her case was officially opened at the District Magistrate Court in Koforidua, presided over by Her Worship Nana Ama Depaa Fynn, Esq, on Monday, September 8.

Following investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the evidence gathered confirmed that the substance poured on Daniel Omane was acidic.

According to the law,  had Daniel died instantly from the acid attack, Vera Asare would have been charged with murder. However, due to the delayed death, she has been charged with manslaughter.

As the District Magistrate Court lacks jurisdiction over such cases, it has referred the matter to the Koforidua High Court for continuation.

The Koforidua High Court is scheduled to commence hearings on October 13 as the suspect has been remanded in custody pending the outcome of the trial.

The Omane family, grieving the loss of their son, has expressed their hope that the law will take its full course.

Even though Daniel left behind a 3-year-old daughter with the accused person, the family insists that justice must prevail.

Emmanuel Kofi Boateng, brother of the deceased, appealed to the court to ensure justice is served so that Daniel Omane’s soul may rest peacefully in the bosom of his creator.

He emphasized that although their loved one cannot be brought back, justice is the only path toward calming nerves down and a necessary deterrent to others.

KiPCoE’s 17TH CONGREGATION CEREMONY: Principal Calls On Gov’t To Recruit More Lecturers

The Presbyterian College of Education in Kibi, located in the Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region, held its 17th graduation ceremony, during which 536 students successfully graduated from the prestigious institution.

For the first time in the College’s history, among the graduating class, 125 students earned first-class honors, while 303 received second-class upper division honors. Additionally, 95 and 30 students attained second-class lower division and third-class standings, respectively.

Speaking to journalists, the Principal of the College, Rev. Charles Fosu-Ayarkwah, called on the central government to recruit more lecturers to improve teaching and learning at the College.

He noted that the College is expanding, with student enrollment increasing each year where the institution has a student population of over 1,830, compared to a faculty of just over 50 lecturers, a disparity he described as ‘disguising.’

Rev. Charles Fosu-Ayarkwah further touch on transportation challenges facing the institution.

Recalled that during the launch of the ‘No Fees Stress’ initiative at SDA College of Education in Asokore, Koforidua, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Ministry of Education was procuring 66-seater buses for the Colleges and 50 pickups for the principals across all 46 Colleges of Education nationwide to support transportation needs.

Rev. Fosu-Ayarkwah humbly reminded President Mahama that they are still awaiting the arrival of those vehicles, indicating that the ones currently in use are outdated and unsuitable for transporting trainees to schools for their teaching practicals.

The 17th congregation ceremony of the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education was held on Friday, August 29, 2025, under the theme: “Empowering the Educators: The Role of Emotional Intelligence in Shaping the Future of Teaching.”

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Right Reverend Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, commended the College’s management for the remarkable academic achievements of the 2024 graduating class.

He recalled that in 2023, only 30 students graduated with first-class honors and urged the management to continue improving academic performance. Lo and behold, he said, over 120 students earned first-class honors in 2024.

He added that he expects even greater results in future congregation ceremonies.

The keynote speaker, Professor Stephen Doe Fia, Head of the Department of Guidance and Counseling at the University of Cape Coast, advised the newly graduated teachers to practice patience when working with schoolchildren.

“It is uncalled-for to see a teacher slapping or beating a school child for wrongdoing, stating that no matter how angry you are as a teacher, note that their parents have confidence in you that you can help mold them to become a prominent person in the future, thus entrusting them under your care,” he noted.

Before the graduation ceremony, he commissioned two projects donated to the College by Holland Akokor and Labianca Company Limited, and Mrs. Winifred Bempong. He thanked them for their kind gesture.

Holland Akokor and Labianca Company Limited drilled a mechanized borehole with both electricity and solar panels, while Mrs. Bempong donated a children’s library which would be used by the demonstration school of the College to enhance teaching and learning.

On his part, the Principal of the College, Rev. Dr. Nicholas Apreh-Siaw, outlined some challenges confronting them. He said the College is in dire need of a 62-capacity bus to support teaching practicals for students.

He also appealed to the government and the Ministry of Education to increase meals for students, noting that the one square meal a day policy for trainees is not encouraging.

According to him, it remains a big concern that the appropriate authorities have to address it accordingly to support students because most of them face a lot of challenges on campus

Akwatia By-Election: NPP Gurus Shake Grounds With Mega Health Walk

Prominent figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the Akwatia constituency ahead of the by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025, staging a massive health walk to signal their intent to retain the seat in honor of the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The exercise, held on Sunday, August 17, began at Boadua Bridge, passed through principal streets in Akwatia, and concluded at the party’s constituency office.

The walk was designed to mobilize grassroots support and engage residents, rallying them to vote for the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumado.

Addressing party faithful and sympathizers, National Organiser, Salam Mustapha stated that the loss of their MP was deeply painful and emphasized the party’s determination not to cede the seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We are aware that the NDC is eager to snatch this seat from us by using rough tactics. We are assuring each one of you that your vote would be protected, so allay any fear and come out in your numbers on September 2, to cast your vote for Solomon Asumado to become the next Member of Parliament for Akwatia,” he said.

Solomon Kwame Asumado, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, expressed confidence in Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tetteh Yohuno that he would act professionally to ensure a peaceful, incident-free election.

He warned that should the IGP and his men fail to uphold their duties accordingly, the party would confront their officers directly, stressing their commitment to preventing bloodshed in Akwatia.

Former Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer of the NPP, Hajia Fati Vondolie, expressed faith in the electorate, noting that the people of Akwatia had witnessed the achievements of the NPP government and the late MP, Yaw Kumi, and would vote accordingly to secure the seat for Solomon Asumado.

Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Jeff Konadu Addo, urged participants to engage every household in the constituency and to encourage them to vote for Asumado on September 2 in memory of Yaw Kumi.

He cited an Akan tradition that holds that when someone dies in a family, a stranger is not brought in from outside to inherit the deceased’s property.

Therefore, he argued, the NDC is not the rightful party to occupy the seat and thus they should back off.

New Duodukrom Chief Pledges To Champion Development And Secure Health Facility

The newly installed Chief of Duodukrom in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council of the Eastern Region has stated that traditional rulers are entrusted with the responsibility to champion development projects for their people.

He assured the people that he would work closely with them to develop the area.

Helicopter Crash: Aristrocats Fraternity Mourns Victims, Calls On Gov’t To Equip The Military To Combat Galamsey

The Aristocrats Fraternity has joined the nation in mourning the eight gallant Ghanaians who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash at Sikakrom in Adansi in the Ashanti Region.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when the deceased were attending the official launch of the Responsible Corporate Mining and Skills Development Program in Obuasi, Ashanti Region. The program aimed to enable miners to use proper methods to safeguard the environment.

The victims were Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defense, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, and six others including three military officers.

Speaking at the Jubilee House after laying their wreath on Sunday, August 10, Chairman of the Aristocrats Fraternity, Ohene Danquah Agyemang Duah, called on the government to provide the necessary resources for the military to fight the galamsey menace in the country.

According to him, when security agencies are well-equipped, eradicating galamseyers from destroying lands, forests, and polluting water bodies is feasible.

“These five government officials and the three Military officers died while on their way to Obuasi for the government’s programme launch to regularize the activities of the illegal mining in the country,” Ohene Duah highlighted.

Ohene Danquah Agyemang Duah, who doubles as a security expert, rejected the idea that President John Dramani Mahama should use the incident as a point of call to declare a State of Emergency on mining.

He explained that 1994 (Act 472) of the constitution specifies the procedure and conditions under which a State of Emergency can be declared, indicating that Ghana has not reached that stage.

He believes that if the government puts in place punitive measures and equips the military in this fight, galamsey would be a thing of the past.

Adding his voice to the long list of mourners nationwide, the Chairman of the Aristocrats Fraternity commiserated with Ghanaians and the bereaved families.

He commended Ghanaians for treating the incident as a national disaster and refraining from politicizing it.

Unity Is The Strength Of Every Successful Association…Kwadjo Asante.

Former Member of Parliament for Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region, Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, has stated that unity is the most essential commodity in every association.

Speaking at the launch of the Friends of Oboafo Kwadjo Asante Welfare Fund in Suhum, he said unity is the pivot of the sustainability of every growing association.

The Oboafo Kwadjo Asante Welfare Fund is aimed at providing financial support to its members during challenging times.

Kwadjo Asante, who serves as the association’s patron, emphasized that the group was not created to score political points in the constituency but rather to assist its members financially in times of critical need.

The former Suhum MP and patron of the association also admonished members to attend meetings and pay their dues regularly so the group can accumulate enough funds to achieve its intended purpose.

“In doing so, it would help the association grow and also provide support to the members on time when something unexpectedly occurs to them,” he noted.

Oboafo Asante officially launched the group.

The secretary of the association, Isaac Boateng, added that the group was established to support its members when unforeseen challenges arise and they require financial assistance.

He urged Ghanaians to join at least one association so that in times of difficulty, they can receive help without resorting to begging for alms.

He explained that this initiative is intended to offer hope to members when they face hardship.

The Suhum Hemaa, Nana Bensua Arko, who graced the occasion, commended the leadership of the association for instituting such a welfare fund to provide financial relief to its members in times of need.

The Friends of Oboafo Welfare Fund aims to donate ¢10,000 to any member who loses a parent, to support funeral expenses, among other benefits.
